Taste a Quintarelli: the Master of Veneto

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose, By any other name would smell as sweet.”
– Romeo and Juliet (II, ii, 1-2)

Guiseppe Quintarelli : 1999 Ca’ del Merlo, Valpolicella IGT
The words of Shakespeare’s Juliet seem apropo when speaking of Guiseppe Quintarelli, the Master of Veneto, and more specifically of his famed Valpolicella & Amarone wines of “fair Verona”…To those of us who’ve coveted his $100 – $950 bottlings of Valpolicella Classico and Amarone della Valpolicella & Riservas, this offer is a rare treat. At regular retail of $90, the “Ca’ del Merlo” offers a more affordable alternative  and a Single Vineyard site experience, but at these prices you can’t pass up the chance to taste Quintarelli’s magic in a bottle!! Now, about the wine….

“This wine is a single vineyard Valpolicella named after a plot of land where a large Merlo (bird) sat perched on a tree overlooking the hillside. It differs from the Valpolicella only in that the grapes come from one specific site, so it’s deeply influenced by the terroir of that one plot. Quintarelli’s “other Valpolicella,” the Ca del Merlo, as all of the wines from the Master of the Veneto, calls for a deeply meditative experience; you can’t drink it without closing your eyes, the better to savor the experience. It’s a voluptuous wine with so many slowly unfolding layers that you’ll get dizzy trying to put your finger on all of them. Chewy rich plum, warm spices, the smoke of a roaring fire, the velvety grasp of tannins, the lingering and kaleidoscopic finish—Ca del Merlo is a Valpolicella that will amaze, please and seduce even the most discerning wine-lover. The 1980 vintages should be drunk within the next three years, while the 1990s can continue to cellar for another decade and the 2000 even longer.” – Italian Wine Merchants Review (**It should be noted that IWM is selling this same vintage and bottle for $86.81 a bottle & for 6 bottles with shipping it would cost about $560!!)

1999 Ca’ del Merlo, I.G.T. – Mac’s Cash Price $54.99
(*Very Limited Qty at a stellar Price in store!)

Info below from one of my favorite wine blogs: Jeremy Parzen’s Do Bianchi
http://dobianchi.com/tag/quintarelli/

“With our main course, we opened Quintarelli’s 1999 Rosso Ca’ del Merlo (an IGT for you DOC/DOCG/PDO/PGI buffs and a great example of how some of Italy’s greatest wines are not DOCGs). Man, this wine was killer: still a baby in the bottle, tannic and rich, with a seductive chewy mouthfeel, excellent with my Brooklyn-style thick cut pork chop. And the price was unexpectedly reasonable.” – Jeremy Parzen, PhD, of Do Bianchi

Yes, you CAN!!!

Yes, you CAN leave the Trailer Park!
Mac’s Top 10 Canned Beers for your Summer (Pool, Park, Beach, Festival & BBQ) enjoyment!!

Mac’s TOP 10 Cans for Summer:

In order from Biggest to Lightest in style! We love our CRAFT BEERS, but sometimes you just need a can of Modelo Especial to cool off by the pool or Yuengling with your BBQ. And, sometimes you want something a little more interesting, that’s why we chose HOP CRISIS and G’Knight. So, read on… and whatever you do, leave the Trailer Park Natty Light behind when you pick up your cans for the weekend!

#1 : Hop Crisis

21st Amendment, San Francisco, CA
A little known fact about Hop Crisis, as this beer was once called Double Trouble Imperial IPA, but we changed the name when we learned that the name was already being used by another fellow craft brewery. The name, Hop Crisis was our Triple IPA and was named as a challenge to the hop shortage and price increase from a few years back where some hops reached $29 a pound. FREE the HOPS!!

#2 : G’Knight

Oskar Blues Brewery, CO
’Knight is a hybrid version of a strong ale – somewhere between an Imperial Red and a Double IPA. We make it with six different malts and three types of hops, then dry-hop it with a mutha lode of Amarillo hops. It is 8.7% alcohol by volume and has 60 International Bittering Units (IBUs)

#3 : Avery India Pale Ale

Avery Brewing Co., Boulder CO

Colorado’s hoppiest pale ale. Avery IPA demands to be poured into your favorite glass to truly appreciate the citrusy, floral bouquet and the rich, malty finish.

#4 : Dale’s Pale Ale

from Oskar Blues Brewery, CO
This is where it all began. Our huge Voluminously-Hopped Mutha of a Pale Ale has been called “One of the quintessential American hoppy pale ales of our time” and was named the Top US Pale Ale by the New York Times. Dale’s Pale Ale started the change for what beer drinkers expect from canned beer.

#5 : Mama’s Little Yella Pils

from Oskar Blues Brewery, CO
Mama’s is a refreshing balance of Saaz hops and specialty malts with a lively character and a delightfully crisp finish. This Pilsner is an easy companion to floating the river or catching your breath after a Rocky Mountain powder turns. Mama’s was crowned “Best Pilsner” in the 2009 Beer Festival of the South.

#6 : Blue Moon

Blue Moon Brewing Co, Golden, CO
The beer is orange-amber in color with a cloudy appearance because it is unfiltered. It is also spiced with coriander and orange peel in addition to the hops found in most beers. Blue Moon has a more pronounced orange flavor than many other beers of the style, and also has a slightly sweet flavor.

#7 : Magic Hat #9

Magic Hat Brewing, Burlington,VT
Not Quite Pale Ale. A beer cloaked in secrecy. An ale whose mysterious and unusual palate will swirl across your tongue and ask more questions than it answers. A sort of dry, crisp, refreshing, not-quite pale ale. #9 is really impossible to describe because there’s never been anything else quite like it.

#8 : Hell or High Watermelon

21st Amendment, San Francisco, CA
Hell or High Watermelon Wheat is our summer seasonal beer available from April through September in six pack cans and on draft. We start by brewing a classic American wheat beer, which undergoes a traditional secondary fermentation using fresh watermelon. A straw-colored, refreshing beer with a kiss of watermelon aroma and flavor.

#9 : Yuengling

Yuengling Brewing, Pottsville, PENN
Yuengling Traditional Lager is an iconic American lager famous for its rich amber color and medium-bodied flavor. Brewed with roasted caramel malt for a subtle sweetness and a combination of cluster and cascade hops, this true original promises a well balanced taste with very distinct character.

#10 : Modelo Especial

Negra Modelo Brewing, Mexico
Modelo especial was first introduced in bottles in 1925.  This lager is stylistically classified with other popular lagers, such as Budweiser, Coors, and Red Stripe.  As of the end of 2008, Modelo especial was the #3 imported beer in the US.

& FOR SHARIN’ W/ THE WHOLE TRAILER PARK
#!!11!! : Oberon, 5LITER Lil’ Keg

Bell’s Brewery, Michigan
A wheat ale fermented with Bell’s signature house ale yeast, mixing a spicy hop character with mildly fruity aromas. The addition of wheat malt lends a smooth mouthfeel, making it a classic summer beer.

New Rhone Wines for the Hot, Hot Heat…

These are White Wines for Red Wine Drinkers…

from Mac’s Beer and Wine

What do I mean by that? Well, I often have customers ask for a mixed case of big reds with 1 or 2 whites, and that tells me they either don’t like whites, or don’t like the typical style of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc’s that are readily available. These are the kind of bottles I know I can sneak in to their case and they won’t disappoint! In fact, they will LOVE, because they’re rich and textured with a weighty mouthfeel and complex layers of fruit, spice and floral characters. Not your buttery Chardonnay or the overly citric Sauvignon Blancs of New Zealand (Not that there’s anything wrong with them!! We like them too, for other reasons) –But, these whites will entice you and create an exciting experience when paired with great company and great food!!

Villa San Juliette, Grenache Blanc – Mac’s Cash Price $18.99
2009 Villa San Juliette, Grenache Blanc, Edna Valley :
“Every once in a while I come across a few rows of grapes that I just have to do something special with. Grapes that are unique and amazing enough to be included in their own special bottling. A one-of-a-kind small lot or “reserve” release that may or may not ever come again… Crisp and lovely with succulent citrus, pear and fig flavors! Juicy and refreshing with a delicate finish.” – Adam LaZarre, Winemaker

Hearst Ranch, Three Sisters Cuvee – Mac’s Cash Price $19.99

2007 Grenache Blanc, Santa Barbara :
“With enticing aromas of fresh green apples, bathed in rich, gooey caramel, our Grenache Blanc is like a candied apple tailor-made for grown ups. Incredibly smooth and luscious on the palate, this wine is fabulous all by itself, but pairs well with macadamia crusted mahi mahi, grilled thresher shark with mango salsa, lobster risotto, or Pad Thai with shrimp.” – Consilience Wines

Elyse, L’Ingenue – Mac’s Cash Price $24.99

2008 L’Ingenue, Sierra Foothills : “(Marsanne, Roussane, Viognier, Grenache Blanc) Yellow-gold. Consilience, Viognier – Mac’s Cash Price $22.99
2007 Viognier, Santa Barbara :
“This lush, voluptuous Viognier far richer than our prior vintages and has a creamy mouth feel. With hints of honeysuckle, spice and lemon curd on the nose, flavors of Braeburn apple and Bosc pear on the palate and crème brûlée on the finish, this wine is satisfying and full bodied. A wee spot of added Chardonnay and Viognier give it a rich backbone with a hint of perfume.  If you don’t care for the zippy grapefruity style of a New Zealand SB, this is your wine.  It also just won a double-gold medal at the Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America conference 2 weeks ago in Orlando.  Impressive stuff for $8.99.” – Salt Hill Review, Whine By The Glass

2008 Arocho, Tempranillo/Garnacha/Syrah -Cash Price $8.99
The Tempranillo/Garnacha is my fave here. At first sip it came off a trifle plummy, but first impressions can be utterly off base…over the course of the glass it grew more lush and complex.  I tasted violets, spices and cherry.  This wine is my new best friend, we go to parties, we sit on my porch after a long Monday, we go camping.  At $8.99–-it’s a no-brainer wine, and you’ll suffer less angst at the gas pump knowing you are saving some green on cheap, but delicious wine. – Salt Hill Review, Whine By The Glass

Special Pre-Order 6+ btl Price $16.99!!

Domaine Sorin, Bandol Rose: “Bandol, located right along the Mediterranean between Marseille and Toulon, is the spiritual home of Mourvèdre. The rosés from this tiny AOC have been lauded by the likes of Alice Waters and Kermit Lynch, and with Domaine Sorin’s blend of Mourvèdre (60%) and Grenache (40%), you’ll join in the chorus of praise. Produced in a much more limited quantity than the “Terra Amata”, this rosé is floral and peachy, with great verve and a seamless finish. It is perfect with summer fare such as seafood pastas, grilled fish with fennel seed and herbs, or vegetables with pistou.

“Luc Sorin is one of southern France’s hottest winemakers. His 28-acre vineyard is located along the Bandol border (part of its acreage is actually within Bandol)… This is an estate to check out before the prices soar, as these are exceptionally high quality wines.” – Robert Parker

This wine is available by EMAIL PRE-ORDER ONLY, if you want any number of bottles you must respond by Friday, June 3rd. Reply to Order or email leigha@macsbeerandwine.com and we will order this wine to be delivered next week!

LA TIMES REVIEW OF A PREVIOUS VINTAGE:

“2007 Domaine Sorin Bandol Rose
WINE OF THE WEEK June 4, 2008 | S. Irene Virbila

To me, summer means rose, and most often it means a rose from the seaside town of Bandol, 10 miles west of Toulon in southern France. This lovely example from Domaine Sorin has a fragrance like wild strawberries and a delicate, pale rose color. Made from a blend of 60% Mourvedre with 30% Grenache and 10% Cinsault, the 2007 Bandol rose is graceful and refreshing and has a lovely, finespun finish.

Chilled, it makes a superb aperitif — keep a bottle in the fridge for unexpected guests. Serve it with a plate of dark olives or thin toasts spread with tapenade, the olive paste of Provence. It’s also perfect with a plate of antipasti, salads, pastas and vegetable soup swirled with pistou, the Provencal version of pesto.” link: http://articles.latimes.com/2008/jun/04/food/fo-wow4

Airfield Estate’s WWII History: A Vineyard Salute
During World War II, an airbase was established at the foothills of Rattlesnake Mountains in Yakima Valley, Washington. After the war, it was sold to the Miller Family. For four generations, the family has farmed the surrounding area using the old airbase as their farm headquarters. The family planted Vineyards at “Airfield” Estate in 1968, and the family has been perfecting its craft ever since. These wines pay tribute to the original use of the property and to our many WWII heroes!!!!

With a fearless commitment, these female pilots transported military aircrafts from the factories to the airfields. This fruit-forward white blend exhibits youthful acidity on entry with a round mid-palate and delicate flavors of white peach, pineapple, and citrus on the finish. Pairs well with a wide variety of lighter style dishes, such as salads, sandwiches, and grilled seafood!!

2008 Airfield, “Bombshell Red,” Yakima Valley, WA
