Sottal: A Perennial Favorite!

A Perennial Favorite!

Sottal, Vinho Regional, Lisboa, Portugal
Mar 21, 2012: It’s that time of year again! Time for evenings on the porch and sunset dinners al fresco… and this gorgeous white wine is my perennial Spring & Summer favorite! The perfect wine for late afternoon porch sipping with fresh and floral aromas of white jasmine, honeysuckle and tropical fruits. Similar to Portugal’s beloved Vinho Verde, this dry Muscat from just outside of Lisbon is a unique and refreshing white big on flavor and low on alcohol at just 10% so you can sip longer into the evening…

2010 Sanguinhal, Sottal, Vinho Regional

“Wonderful, light aromas of citrus fruits, kiwi, ripe strawberry and a perfume-like gardenia quality…crisp lemon/lime flavors without overbearing acidity. Subtle effervescence gives it a surprising creamy texture. Two Thumbs Up!” – Gil Kulers, Atlanta Journal Constitution

Piuquenes Cab Sauv + Merlot Duo

Reg. Price $9.99/ea | DUO: $11.98 | Mixed Case = $61.10

Feb 22, 2012: Both of these wines are expressive with fruit and soft, integrated tannins making them the perfect house wines to open when the neighbors drop in! Located at the crest of the Andes Mountains, their family vineyard is named after the Auka & Piuquenes, the first Indians who lived in Mendoza´s southern region of San Carlos. With respect for the land, these wines are a tribute to their spiritural history of those tribes: “The Piuquenes are wild ducks that inhabit the high valleys of The Andes. They symbolize the free spirits that bind land, water and sky together; filling with magic and splendor all those that watch their flight in the clean Andean sky. Likewise, with our wines, we want to leave you with a magic and unique moment…” -San Polo Bodega & Vinedos
…Originally $9.99 each, this Duo saves you $8, and when you buy a Mixed case you get an add’l discount bring the total savings to $58.78!!!

Piuquenes, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mendoza
“With a nose of rich blackberries and plums, this Cabernet is a pleasant surprise. The forward fruit follows all the way through the palate and into the finish, along with gentle tannins and oak. Ideal to serve with blue cheese, chocolate mousse, and red meat stews.

Piuquenes, Merlot, Mendoza
“The nose is all Merlot with just the right combination of dark red fruits and oak that is delightful. The palate is juicy and fruit driven with a soft tannin & oak finish. A very easy to drink wine. Ideal to serve with stews, meats, barbecues, prosciutto, and cheeses.”

California Wines: While not uncharted territory, our featured wineries for the evening {Wind Gap, Samsara, Sans Liege and Vina Robles} are all small-production, unique producers highlighting some of the best of California’s Central & Coastal regions. I’ll admit, I’ve focused on Italians, Spanish, French, Chilean…basically anything but California, so this will be our first tasting featuring wines from my great homestate. But, these aren’t your granddad’s Cabernets (not that there’s anything wrong with a bold Napa Cab), we just want to feature vineyards that are producing wines from some of my favorite grapes: Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Vermentino, Verdelho, Viognier…is your mouth watering yet? Wintry Wonderland…??

I (Leigha) was away last week for a wonderful trip to snowy Vermont, where a bottle of this Cab Franc would have come in handy! We had snow for three days in a row and skii’d two out of three of them at Stowe and then Bolton Valley.

Vermont was a slight departure from wine for me, Beer was on the menu every night with amazing small breweries making phenomenal Craft beers only available on draft up there! If you ever make the trip, head to Hill Farmstead Brewery in Greensboro, Vermont and then stop in to Three Penny Taproom in Montpelier for a few pints and some awesome Vermont Cheese. For our last night, we stopped in at Cork, a fabulous new wine bar in Waterbury and had dinner and wine with the itinerant restaurateurs Misery Loves Co., a pop-up restaurant featuring James Beard nominated chefs, an ever-changing menu and inspired wine selections.

[a Loire Sauvignon Blanc paired with the Fennel & Leek Tart beautifully!]

Ray is up in Vermont now, hopefully enjoying it as much as we did, eating, drinking and skiing while we’re here in 60+ degree weather! But, despite the fact that Winter may have come and gone down here in the South, this Cab Franc will be perfect for the slightly cooler evening chill! So, pull on that sweater and head to the porch with bottle in hand. Winter is a wonderland, for sure…
