Apr 24, 2012: I had the pleasure of spending this past weekend in Paso Robles, a place of true grit and beauty. From my first sight of the oaks on the rolling hills to the endless rows of gnarly old-vines at Clayhouse’s Red Cedar Vineyard, transporting me to simpler times of living off the land. Primarily a ranching town, Paso Robles growth as a world-class wine region still carries the denim and boots feel of the frontier. Clayhouse fits right in with it’s 150 year old Adobe house in the center of it’s vast Red Cedar Vineyard. We tasted this Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon right in the vineyard, enjoying the same sun and breeze the vines have thrived under for over twenty years. These wines make you want to kick off your boots and relax under a shady oak tree. Pick up a few on this week’s deal and enjoy a little taste of Paso for yourself…

TASTING NOTES:
Sauvignon Blanc: “Made in a refreshing aperitif style, Clayhouse Sauvignon Blanc exhibits a bouquet of starfruit, green pear, honeydew melon and grapefruit, with a hint of grass. There’s a touch of minerality that enhances the floral notes and the wine finishes with a creamy mouthfeel (from sur lie fermentation and aging) and mouthwatering acidity.”
Cabernet Sauvignon: “The Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon has aromas of Bing cherry, with dark spice notes of cinnamon, allspice, and fresh, sweet fennel. The soft dried cherry fruit
on the palate has hints of vanilla and licorice on the finish, followed by a touch of black pepper. The wine is ready to drink, with smooth tannins, and chalky cherry and earthy complexities behind the soft oak. It’s an excellent companion to ribs, grilled meats and pasta.”
