Airfield Estate’s WWII History: A Vineyard Salute
During World War II, an airbase was established at the foothills of Rattlesnake Mountains in Yakima Valley, Washington. After the war, it was sold to the Miller Family. For four generations, the family has farmed the surrounding area using the old airbase as their farm headquarters. The family planted Vineyards at “Airfield” Estate in 1968, and the family has been perfecting its craft ever since. These wines pay tribute to the original use of the property and to our many WWII heroes!!!!
60% Viognier, 18% Chardonnay, 14% Gewürztraminer, & 8% Roussanne. This white blend pays tribute to the “Fly Girls” of WWII. With a fearless commitment, these female pilots transported military aircrafts from the factories to the airfields. This fruit-forward white blend exhibits youthful acidity on entry with a round mid-palate and delicate flavors of white peach, pineapple, and citrus on the finish. Pairs well with a wide variety of lighter style dishes, such as salads, sandwiches, and grilled seafood!!
2008 Airfield, “Bombshell Red,” Yakima Valley, WA
41% Syrah, 35% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Sangiovese, 4% Malbec & 3% Cab Franc. A beloved favorite of many, this approachable red blend showcases dark, overlapping aromas of oak, vanilla, raspberry jam, blackcurrants, & a hint of cocoa, leaving lingering flavors of dark fruit & toasted oak on the palate. With a rounded, full-bodied mouthfeel, this red blend provides supple tannins and pairs well with a wide range of foods, especially grilled burgers and steak.
